Bird on a Wire and Polperro New Releases
Bird on a Wire
Caroline Mooney has produced two exceptional wines with these releases, the Chardonnay is perfectly balanced and complex, the Pinot Noir refined, pure with delicacy and intensity.
On tasting at our trade day Monday 5th Aug, 12-5pm 7 Alfred Place CBD
2016 Bird on a Wire Chardonnay
A combination of superb talent and one of the most highly sought after vineyards has produced this stellar Yarra Valley Chardonnay. Caroline sources fruit from the oldest plantings of the Willow Lake Vineyard in the Upper Yarra, having worked with the grower for many years. Whole bunch pressing, wild yeast-barrel fermentation and partial malo in 25% new oak builds complexity around the pure fruit.
2018 Bird on a Wire Pinot Noir
This is the first Bird on a Wire wine to come from the Kerr family’s superb site in Yellingo (South of Woori Yallock). Brilliant and clear in the glass, an indication of a quality Pinot Noir to come. Gorgeously perfumed with fresh cherry, floral notes and touch of spice. The wine follows on the palate with exceptional length and clarity.
2017 Polperro Single Vineyard Pinot Noir releases
These wines are a culmination of great experience, subtle handling of the fruit and an understanding of each vineyard. They are a transparent expression of each site given the similar vine age, being from the same clone (MV6) and the same vinification.
Having seen these wines over the years, many times out of barrel it is very exciting to see the benefits of Sam’s organic farming practices.

2017 Polperro Landaviddy Pinot Noir
Sourced from a small vineyard in a sheltered valley, site orientation and cool sea breezes moderating ripening. Perfumed, supple with a lovely flow, turkish delight, spice and brambly complexity.
2017 Polperro Mill Hill Pinot Noir
The highest site with a bedrock of Granite featuring. Poised, red fruit, minerality and great acidity. Intense and drawn out over a long finely structured palate.
2017 Polperro Talland Hill Pinot Noir
From the warmest and earliest picked site, bold and powerful yet silky. Darker fruits than the other wines with riper, fuller expression. Gorgeous ‘moreish’ Pinot Noir!
2017 Polperro Single Vineyard Chardonnay releases
I’ve written of my excitement at the direction and quality of Australian Chardonnay a number of times and Sam’s wines are front and centre. Always bright and alive with texture, intensity and most of all; flavour. I love the fruit flavours of great Australian Chardonnay.
2017 Polperro Mill Hill Chardonnay
There’s something about Granite that provides a wine with minerality, purity and acidity. Plenty of structure to build around. Lemon curd, spices, yellow peach on the palate and of course great length.
2017 Polperro Talland Hill Chardonnay
A warmer, more sheltered site than Mill Hill, producing a little more flesh with nougat, stonefruit and a creamy texture all held together with great acidity. Delicious and textured.
